Lodi California Wine Country

On the Northern California tourism scene, "Lodi Wine Country" is emerging as a popular wine destination. With a spectacular new wine center and a flurry of winery openings, the region is finally attracting the attention it deserves.

Located just 90 minutes from San Francisco and 60 minutes from Napa, Lodi enjoys a similar climate and growing conditions to its coastal neighbors. Lodi produces more wine than Napa and Sonoma combined, yet is only now becoming known in the consumer world.

Some of America's most popular wines are made here, from Mondavi "Woodbridge" to Gallo "Turning Leaf" and Sebastiani "Vendange." Glen Ellen, Sutter Home, Forest Glen, Beringer and Fetzer wines are among the other wines produced in Lodi. Many consumers may not have heard of Lodi before because most of the wine from the region bore the broad "California" label. A decade ago, only a few labels were produced under the "Lodi" name; now there are over 250. Visitors to the region will be delighted to discover the 70 boutique wineries that dot the landscape, offering a friendly welcome, a relaxing atmosphere and award-winning wines.

Michael David Winery

The Phillips family has been farming since our Great Great Grandfather Andrew Harshner and his wife Lucille homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi, following the Civil War in the 1860′s. The region's natural affinity for grape growing quickly became evident, and by the turn of the century (the last one), twenty-five percent of California's grape acreage was in Lodi. A generation later saw the demise of many pioneering wineries in the state.

Originally devoted to vegetables, the Phillips' farms evolved to include many different fruits, including fifteen different wine varietals that were shipped throughout the country during Prohibition with instructions on “how not to have the grapes turn into wine”. Thereby, Prohibition was good for Lodi growers, with families everywhere keeping up the tradition of wine with meals by ordering these grapes and “juice” to be bottled at home.

The Dancing Fox Winery and Bakery

203 South School Street
(209) 366-2634

This century old brick building is a unique place to eat and drink. A fanciful place where legend and reality join and take you back in both time and spirit. A time when friends would gather at the local pub to warm themselves next to the fire and enjoy food, drink, and conversation. To a time when bread was made from fresh ground grain, gathered from the field. Fermented the slow, natural way, for flavor. Kneaded and formed gently by caring hands then placed in a wood fired brick oven for the perfect crust, sealing in the moisture.

The aroma will draw you further into a place surrounded by antique furniture and murals. Once seated you will not refuse a pint of ale or a glass of hearty red wine grown and made by the proprietor himself with the help of his three hard-working lads...and a bit of magic.

Great Friends Our philosophy at Grands Amis is simple: great wine is meant to be shared with "great friends." The quest for excellence begins in the vineyard and ends only when we can present our exceptional wine to you.

We are proud to say that all of our small lots of high quality wines are made from Lodi Appellation grapes. We personally farm all the vineyards from which our wine grapes are chosen. We are therefore able to give the attention to detail required to produce the quality we demand. We firmly believe the quest for excellence begins in the vineyard and ends only when we can present to you an exceptional wine. We hope you will enjoy our wine with great friends while creating memorable, fun times!

Welcome! I could show you all kinds of pictures of pretty vineyards, tasting rooms and grapes, but at the end of the day, nothing beats sharing a table with a bunch of friends and a few excellent bottles of wine.

We'll get on the tractor to work the vines no matter how cold or dark, often in the still of the very early morning at 2:30 a.m., when most are just dreaming of wine. If wine needs to age in barrels a bit longer, or could use some blending wine, we'll do whatever it takes to make it that much better.

So feel free to click around this Web site of ours to find out more about us, then stop on by for a visit to get to know the real people behind the vines and wines bearing my name. Cheers!

Berghold Estate Winery

17343 North Cherry Road
(209) 333-9291

The Berghold Family The Berghold family name dates back to the 1600’s in Austria where it has been traced back to the meaning of “vineyard worker”. This ancestral fact may explain the current Berghold family’s passionate pursuit to produce only the finest winegrapes and estate wines. Winegrape Growers First The Berghold Family has been growing winegrapes in Lodi since 1986. Today, the estate is an assemblage of three contiguous vineyards totaling 85 acres of Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. The family has been selling winegrapes to a number of fine wineries, including some based in Napa and Sonoma counties. Becoming Winemakers After nearly a decade of growing and selling their grapes to other wineries, the Bergholds decided the time had come to bottle and sell wine under the Berghold label. In 1999, Berghold Vineyards Syrah was born, followed in 2000 by Viognier. Today, the winery specializes in the production of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, and also produces a Cabernet-Syrah blend, Merlot and Zinfandel. Under the direction of the Berghold’s son and winemaker, Miles, all wines are estate vintages, are terroir driven, and are made using artisan techniques combined with state of the art technology. A Victorian Winery and Tasting Room Victorian winery owners, Joe and Kay Berghold, are collectors at heart. For nearly two decades, the couple purchased and stored antiques from the American Victorian period (1860 – 1900) with a goal in mind – to build an architecturally unique winery and tasting room representative of the era of the pieces in their collection – and the same era of beginning of Lodi wine history. That dream is now a reality in Berghold Vineyards and Winery. What Next What does the future hold for Berghold Vineyards and Winery? A line of reserve wines is planned to include a Sparkling Syrah and Syrah Port in addition to estate bottled Olive Oil. The family’s Late Harvest Viognier was released in October 2005 and has been a hit with visitors!
